The Girls Club

I was really affected by a story in the news this week, involving an attack, on a 15 year girl (in Brooklyn), who was nearly beaten to death, in public by 5 girls (her age).  There are so many upsetting aspects to this story. In a Daily News article,  the writer denounces the dozens of witnesses for filming the incident instead of trying to break up the fight. In my opinion, however the fact that the Daily news had this story on the cover, and the video on their website, only sensationalized the violence on a much larger platform, and perpetuated the objectification of these girls. The writer even described, and included screen shots of one of the attackers in her bra, because she had lost her shirt during the fight. There are also theories that, the witnesses didn't try and break up the fight, because "girl fights" are considered harmless, and funny, yet the victim's face was literally crushed and broken.

A lot of people had very strong reactions to this story, and were expressing their disgust towards the attackers, their families/parents, the media, the witnesses etc. The attackers in this case, were girls, and I mean GIRLS, children, adolescents, and though they should be held responsible, I believe we are all accountable for the welfare of our communities, especially the children.

The following is a link to a list of non profit organizations that offer therapeutic programs for adolescents in NYC.  I chose to apply as a volunteer for the girls club in the Lower East Side.

I just thought it is good to know, that there are ways to be apart of the solution.

I also dedicated my DJ set last night to the girls club
