A little Food for Thought

Came across this debate earlier tonight while I was on the treadmill. The debate was over the controversy regarding Common's visit to the white house. I've always had a thing for Jon Stewart, but after this debate, I officially have a crush on him:)

As The Record Turns

It is always advised to listen to a song before playing it out. Every now and then I find myself dropping a record that I haven't listened to or haven't listen to in it's entirety. Usually the latter. Sometimes these songs will have a hidden gem or hidden disaster. It could be a really loud and invasive break, or sometimes the beat will drop all together for like 16 bars which could be an eternity on the dance floor. I'm not quite sure which I prefer. It's good to be in control, but sometimes we have to just let life happen. The record could always skip no matter how well you you think that you know it won't and playing a song you never played before could completely change your entire set.

My Head is Spinning

(pun intended). I went from bohemian to bourgeois over the course of 24hrs. Friday I did a gig in Williamsburg and was super guarded on my way to the spot. I have a weird defense when I go to 'hipsterville'. There really is nothing "cool" about me. I love Cyndi Lauper, I go to starbucks a few times a day and I don't wear vintage shoes. The party was for a screening for a film called "Dame Factory" by Melanie Abramov, who's boyfriend Blue Davis happens to be an old bud of mine. The people were really cool and I was able to put my guard down as soon as I saw a few heads bop to some oldschool SWV. So, they were hip but not pretentious. Regardless of what I claim about not being hip, I love taking a break from the same ole same ole, and getting the chance to mix some rare grooves.

On Saturday I did an event at Avenue and it's crazy even after 2+ years, that spot is still 'bangin'. Models, socialites and a mob of anxious club goers outside. I actually got away with some lounge and funk in the first hour or so, but once people started dancing it was nothing but top 40.

Tonight it was as if Friday and Saturday meshed together. I mixed a set after the Eric Lewis (ELEW) show at Millesime. It was the Artsy crowd in a sophisticated and luxurious environment. ELEW is insane. His style is unlike anything I've ever seen. This was an open minded and sophisticated crowd, I could rock just about anything and I did:)
