Coffee House

I tend to become a little restless during snow storms. I don't like staying inside all day and I can't be outside for long. Fortunately there is a very cute coffee house near my apt. A nice warm and comforting place to sip some chai tea and relax. This, particular coffee house also has a great selection of music. Here are some of the songs that put me at ease:)

Just a Song I Love

Nantes by Beirut

Waiting for Lauryn....

Most of us remember when Columbia Records released 'The Miseducation Lauryn Hill' because the album was a mind blowing and timeless masterpiece of pure excellence and ingenious musicianship. At the time, pop music was a dry desert, infested with boy bands, 'jigginess' and 'tween sensations'. Music lovers were dehydrating and then finally, The miseducation of Lauryn hill was this abundant and refreshing stream of talent and beautiful music that quenched our thirst. What most of us don't remember or even care to know or remember were the series of events that followed and surrounded this sonic gem. From anguish to breakdowns, and a series of very ugly and nasty lawsuits. The album was plagued with tragedy, almost from the moment that it was released. The album was like the "Helen of Troy" of the music business. An incomparable, cornucopia of beauty that would be the cause of a massive war.

Now, Lauryn Hill seems to have been defeated. Well over a decade has passed, rumors have circulated that she has gone crazy, and yet this incredible album is still credited as being one of the best R&B records of all time. The real tragedy is that The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill will probably be her only solo album (with the exception of her (hard to listen to) unplugged album).

Tween Dreams

Defending pop music is a common theme in my blog. As a DJ, I am often expected to maintain a strong "cool factor" in the music I listen to and play. What's cool? It's so relative, but just because an artist becomes a top 40 king or queen, doesn't mean they can't be cool anymore.

I was a 'tween' in the early to mid 90s. I came across a few cassette tape mixes that I use to 'rock to' on my Sony Sports Walkman. check it out.

The Youngest & Cutest Female DJ in the world!

DJ Ellie D:

I stumbled upon this girl on FaceBook, and I can't get enough of her DJ skills! It almost makes me think about how my parents had me studying the violin by the time I was 3 years old. A lot of parent get their children into something creative at a young age. Now these super cool parents have their little girl learning how to play the turntables! How cool is that?

5 Amazing Benefits of Dark Chocolate

Just like a glass of red wine a day, a piece of dark chocolate a day is good for you too! Yipee!

1. Studies have shown dark chocolate lowers blood pressure.
2. Studies have also shown dark chocolate to lower bad cholesterol (LDL)
3. Chocolate turns women 'on' more than a passionate kissing session (no wonder they want it for Valentine's Day!)
4. Chocolate contains serotonin, a natural mood-boosting anti-depressant.
5. Chocolate also stimulates pleasure-inducing endorphin production

El, Oh, Vee, Eee

"The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference".

My friend posted this statement on his FB status yesterday and it is so, so true.
Love and Hate are full of intense and passionate emotions. Indifference is pure apathy. In order to love and hate you have to feel so many emotions. Indifference is to feel nothing. I can say I have been both passionate and indifferent. I use to always think that love is better and I still do believe it. I'm just not as sure of that, as I once was. Maybe that's called 'maturity'.

Life is like an

Ice Cream Sundae

(Yes, kind of in essence of Forrest Gump's "box of chocolates")

Starting with the ice cream, the definition and flavor of our existence. The ice cream is who we are, the foundation of our purpose in life. Since the majority of a Sundae consists of ice cream, it's pretty important that we truly love and respect ourselves as the overall taste, enjoyment and happiness of a Sundae is based on the taste of the ice cream.

On top of the ice cream is the chocolate syrup, our passion and soul. The syrup is everything, anything and everyone that we love. For some it's music, for others it's GOD, for many it's family, for most of us it's many things. Whether it's deep or light, like chocolate it always gives us a tingly fuzzy feeling inside. An Ice Cream Sundae is incomplete with out the chocolate syrup as our lives are with out love.

On top of the ice cream, on top of the chocolate syrup is the whip cream, our hopes and dreams. We all need a dream, but an ice cream Sundae can not be made of only whip cream. We need everything else to hold our dreams. Yet, an Ice Cream Sundae is incomplete with out the whip cream, hence our dreams:)

On top of the Ice Cream, on top of the chocolate syrup and on top of whip cream is the cherry on top, 'The one we love'. Yes, a cherry makes an Ice Cream Sundae seem complete. But a lot of us don't eat the cherry, because a lot of us don't need the cherry. The cherry is sweet, simple and natural but is also a very small part of the Sundae.

If you are single this Valentine's Day, than treat yourself to an Ice Cream Sundae and tell them to 'hold the cherry'. Because like life, an ice cream Sundae is so sweet, Delicious, enjoyable, tasty, treaty, yummy, wonderful, fulfilling, filling and so MMMMMMMMM mmmmmmmmmmmm MMMMMMMMMMMMM even with out the cherry on top! :)

I Miss Buying CDs

When I was in HS, I would save and spend my money on my three basic needs: Music, clothes and chocolate. Well, not so much chocolate but it was, has been and always will be a necessity in my life.

In either case, the idea of having to save and spend money on music today is almost a joke. When I was in HS, the only way to listen to my favorite song/artist (at the time)would be to either pay $15 for the CD, wait for it on the radio or dub a copy from a friend on to a cassette tape. It sounds so ancient just describing it, as any and all songs anyone could ever want now are just a click away.

I never thought I'd say it, but I miss the old ways of buying music. I miss the feeling I'd have as I was getting ready to go out and buy 'that' CD that I wanted. I miss the subway ride to Tower Records on Broadway and 66th. I miss walking through the store and stopping here and there to one of the listening stations to check out a new artist. I miss the anticipation, excitement I felt as I struggled to open the annoying plastic CD wrap. I miss the subway ride home as I listened to 'that' song that I had to buy the whole CD to listen to. I miss it, I never thought I would, but I really miss it. When I put it all together and realize WHAT it is that I miss, I miss buying CDs.

So Lost

I have 'a thing' when it comes to watching TV or DVDs. I don't really pay attention. I usually have the TV on in the back round while I am on the computer, talking OTP and even when I have company. Some people require absolute silence when they watch a DVD. I personally do not like to devote all of my energy and attention to the television whether it's a movie or TV show. Fortunately for me, most of the TV shows I follow don't really require my 100% attention. I can follow the storyline, comedy or intensity of shows like 30 Rock, Dexter, Weeds, Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy and 24 with out paying attention. The show 'Lost' on the other hand (esp the last season and current season) is different. The truth is, I have no idea what the *%&$ is going on. Maybe it's because I am not really paying attention or maybe it's because it makes no sense, or the story line is just too complex.
